The first day of summer has been well awaited across the whole of England after a wet and windy start to the year. To celebrate its arrival, we are sharing all of the bold, bright and beautiful inspiration around hosting a colourful wedding during the summer months. 

If you’re a colour lover, it only makes sense that you would want to be surrounded by lots of it during your special day. However, it can sometimes be hard to visualise how to bring so many contrasting colours together seamlessly. Luckily, Angel and Dan showed us exactly how to perfect the art of it when they got married at The Old Hall Ely earlier this year.

Having Fun with Florals

During spring and summer, the entrance to The Old Hall Ely is dressed beautifully in Wisteria, adding an element of colour before you even bring your own touches to your day. 

We believe your flower arrangements are one of the most stunning features of your day. Line the aisle, arch the entranceways and don’t forget those beautiful bouquets! For Angel and Dan’s day, we saw pops of purple, pink, peach, orange and white throughout all of their florals, which really helped to bring their vision to life. 

Table Toppers

Aside from the gorgeous floral centrepieces upon each table, there are some incredible additions you can add to impress your guests at dinner. Smaller vases, vibrant candles, pretty plates and luxurious linens can all be inventive ways to make your sitting stand out.

Pyjama Party

With weddings, it truly is in all of the details! We absolutely loved Angel’s idea of her bridal party parading around in their vibrant matching PJ sets the morning of the wedding. Not only did it set the tone of the day off in the right way, the array of shades made for the most fun group pictures, that will no doubt be cherished amongst the girls forever.

Bridesmaid Beauty

In recent years, we’ve seen bridesmaids move away from matching dresses to multiways and stand-alone styles. As you can imagine, the bridesmaids certainly looked breathtaking when they each made an appearance in their individual pieces – showcase shades of sage and olive green, mustard yellow, burnt orange, bright pink and pale pink florals. 

The possibilities really are endless when it comes to creating your own colourful wedding day, and if this hasn’t left you feeling inspired, we don’t know what will!

Our starlit dancefloor is revealed at 9pm with a professional DJ as your entertainment for the evening whilst you can enjoy our cocktail bar. The party sadly ends at 1am, with guests departing. However, if you wish to elevate your night, why not retreat to one of our luxury bedrooms and make the most of our visit to The Old Hall Ely

The Marquee

The permanent marquee at The Old Hall Ely has a grand feeling with immense views of our grounds and Ely Cathedral through the floor to ceiling glass. Hiring the Marquee is a great idea for any event, from large scale awards ceremonies, company parties, conferences and much more!

This room is an ideal meeting room to hire and is perfect for boardroom style presentations and meetings as well as private dining events. The Terrace Room is a private room with sophisticated interiors and doors that open directly onto our terrace, creating a fantastic break out area.

The Lakes is a multifunctional room that is ideal for workshops, meetings, private dining or as a supporting breakout room for larger events. With links to our Orangery and house bar, we can shape this room to suit your needs.

Our Grounds

The Old Hall Ely is set within ten acres of manicured grounds, featuring three ornate lakes and breathtaking views of Ely Cathedral. Our Gardens are a fantastic open space for team building exercises, summer parties or workshops.

We also have two beautiful terraces, each with its own features. The Cathedral Terrace looks out onto Ely Cathedral and is popular amongst our guests for hosting drinks receptions whilst our Topiary courtyard is also a well loved space for drinks receptions as it has direct links to our indoor spaces, creating a fantastic indoor-outdoor setting to host your event.

Back in 1907, Anna Jarvis actually founded this special day due to her mother’s involvement in Women’s groups to promote friendship and health. In 1907, she held a memorial service for her mother and this important day of appreciation began!

At The Old Hall Ely, many of the inspiring Women are Mothers and as we are a family business, we value this day greatly.

Looking for the best restaurant for seafood night in Ely? Visit The Orangery Restaurant at The Old Hall Ely for our Seafood Night and enjoy a fine dining experience whilst overlooking Ely Cathedral.

Our talented team of chefs have curated a range of locally sourced, fresh fish dishes which you can enjoy with some delicious wines, that have been carefully chosen to pair perfectly with your dish.

To choose from our delicious selection of starters is a difficult decision to make! Just to name a few from our unique menu; enjoy seared king scallops, pickled apple, smoked lobster bisque and apple foam or go for our delicious dish of Cromer crab and plaice squid ink tortellini, oak Bacchus, apple, dill and sea herbs.

Moving through to mains, our chefs have perfected an exciting variety for our guests to enjoy. Go for our steamed mussels with garlic, parsley, white wine cream sauce and baked bread or choose our sticky soy, ginger and honey glazed tuna steak, Israel cous cous with pickled cucumber, sesame dressing and Bok choi.

Room for dessert? Dive into our incredible rhubarb and ginger meringue tart with hazelnut ice cream and tuille. Choose our stunning maple and pecan glazed éclair with vanilla and Biscoff cream as well as pumpkin seed oil ice cream.

Valentine’s Set Menu at the The Old Hall Ely

Are you looking for the most romantic restaurant to celebrate Valentines, a Valentine’s set menu or a nice restaurant near Cambridge? Then the Orangery restaurant at The Old Hall Ely is the perfect place!

As we are a wedding venue, we know how to celebrate love! This year, our chefs have been working on an extra special Valentines menu which will be served in the most romantic setting. Overlooking Ely Cathedral, our restaurant is truly magical and when paired with excellent dishes and service, The Orangery is the perfect setting to spend Valentines.

Starting off with a complementary glass of organic cava, which you can enjoy by one of our cosy open fires, move in to the restaurant to begin your dining experience! Our menu begins with a delicious offering of starters from smoked duck carpaccio, Romanesco, fennel and hazelnut dressing to steamed mussels, garlic, parsley and white wine cream sauce with baked bread.  

Moving on to main courses, our chefs have perfected a range of unique dishes. Just to pick a few of these stunning choices, enjoy 6oz Lamb rump, Lamb fat potato, wintergreen salad, garden pea and mint puree and lamb sauce or seared Cornish cod, squid ink gnocchi, textures of broccoli, smoked Oyster mayonnaise and roasted corn.

For puddings, we have a romantic sharing dessert of trio of chocolate including chocolate and espresso delice, chocolate and pistachio tart and chocolate and cherry macaron. Don’t feel like sharing? Enjoy a stunning classic with a twist, white chocolate profiteroles, vanilla cream and raspberry textures, to end your evening with a delicious dessert.

Our set menu is just £150 for two, for three stunning courses of fine dining.
